MRSA Fact Sheet:

Quick Facts about………… MRSA

  • About 30% of the population carries Staph aureus bacteria on the skin or in the nose.  Most staph infections are skin infections that are minor and easily treated.

  • Methicillin-resistant Staph aureus (MRSA) is a type of Staph aureus bacteria that has developed resistance to the antibiotic methicillin and usually several other antibiotics.

  • MRSA is not a new disease, nor is it specific to Indiana or to school settings.  Because MRSA is so common, it is not reportable in Indiana.

  • A small percentage of the population also carries MRSA on the skin or in the nose.  Most MRSA infections are skin infections that are treatable.

  • Rarely, MRSA infections can be fatal.  This can happen if MRSA bacteria get into the blood stream or other body organs.  These infections can be very difficult to treat.

  • Proper prevention at all times can help decrease incidence of MRSA infections:
  • Practice frequent and appropriate hand hygiene.
  • Keep open areas on the skin covered with a waterproof or impermeable bandage.
  • Do not share personal hygiene items such as soap, towels, razors, etc.
  • Do not touch other person’s bandages or open skin areas.
  • See your health care provider immediately, if you notice wounds or skin breaks that are red, swollen, painful, or draining.
  • Routinely clean and sanitize areas where there is frequent direct skin contact, such as locker rooms and athletic equipment.

NOTE:  Proper disinfectant products should be used and the proper dilution with appropriate contact times must be followed as directed on the product label.  Facility officials should monitor what areas are being cleaned and by whom.

Executive Summary: Legislation was signed into law on August 3,
2007 that requires the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to
provide for the development of a private sector led voluntary
certification program for all-hazards business emergency
preparedness. This program is to be developed in consultation with
key stakeholders reflecting existing best practices and standards.
The program represents a significant opportunity to link preparedness
activities by business with bottom-line market based incentives.

The Law: The law is titled ``Implementing Recommendations of the
9/11 Commission Act of 2007'' and is also referred to as H.R. 1 and
Public Law 110-53. Title IX of the Act addresses private sector
preparedness and the certification program. The full text can be found at
http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h110-1&tab=summary

Key Points of New Program and Legislation:

* Goal of the program is to provide a method to independently
certify the emergency preparedness of private sector organizations
including their disaster/emergency management and business continuity
programs. The program focuses on certifying the preparedness of
businesses and other private sector entities and does not involve any
individual professional certification. The focus is on all-hazards
preparedness and does not focus on terrorism.

* The program will be voluntary. Businesses will decide
whether or not they wish to obtain certification of their
organizations' preparedness, likely based on what benefits they see
in such certification. There is no legal requirement to participate.

* Key stakeholders are invited to participate in the
development of the program. Consultation with a variety of
organizations and various sectors is required by the legislation.
Program development will likely include involvement by a diversity of
private sector advisory groups and others.
